Some homes don’t need a full knock-down and start again to feel or look brand new – they just require smart decisions, a clear vision of what the ‘big picture’ needs to be and a willingness to think outside the square. This recent renovation + decorating makeover in Melbourne is the perfect example of how thoughtful design, strategic spending, and a strong creative direction has completely transformed a much-loved family home.
Our clients came to Toni + Co wanting a “freshen up” – but what they really needed was clarity on how to do that – where to start, what was going to create the most impact. The home had great bones, beautiful furniture, and loads of potential, but it felt a little disconnected and dated, their last update was 20 years ago. The main focus of the brief? Create their dream kitchen inspired by their deep love of all things French, specifically, the lady of the house longed for a ‘Modern French Provincial’ style kitchen that felt elegant, warm and was practical. The dining room, lounge, hallway, master bedroom and ‘sitting room’ all required a re-vamp also.
A Modern French Provincial vision, perfectly balanced

The kitchen redesign was where everything came together. We reimagined the entire space from the ground up, carefully balancing classic French provincial elements with a modern edge.
White shaker-profile cabinetry and beautiful carrara engineered stone formed the foundation, timeless, elegant, and quietly confident. To avoid the space feeling flat or overly traditional, we introduced a deep blue island bench. This became the hero of the kitchen, grounding the palette and adding depth and personality.
Beautiful handles, carefully selected appliances, and a fully integrated fridge ensured the kitchen felt cohesive rather than cluttered. Every detail was intentional. Nothing shouted. Everything worked together.
This is modern French provincial done right, layered, restrained, and completely functional and liveable.
Making smart choices to get the ‘the most bang for buck’
One of the most important conversations we had early on was about where to spend – and where not to. It would have been easy to pour the budget into brand-new cabinetry and call it a day. But honestly we knew that cabinetry alone would not create the FEELING nor the look and feel that they wanted for all of the areas.
Instead, we showed our clients how replacing the dated floor tiles and tired carpet throughout the home with a light oak–coloured engineered floorboard laid in a herringbone pattern, repainting a consistent fresh white colour, adding wainscoting on the walls throughout and adding texture by way of sheers, rugs and greenery would completely elevate their home as a whole. The flooring and paint in particular, visually opened up the home, and unified every room.
The result? A dramatic transformation that not only enhanced the modern French provincial aesthetic but also significantly increased the perceived value of the home. Same layout. Same footprint. Totally different feel.
Working with what you already own and love

One of our favourite parts of this renovation was working with the clients’ existing furniture. They owned several beautiful, larger-scale French-style pieces that deserved to stay, they just needed the right supporting cast.
Rather than replacing everything, we curated select new items to enhance what was already there. Decorating elements were layered in thoughtfully to tie spaces together, reinforce the French influence, and add warmth.
A beautiful pink floral couch set was repurposed and elevated with deeper-toned rugs, cushions, and throws, creating contrast and richness. The entire home was repainted in a fresh, clean white, instantly brightening the space and allowing furniture and finishes to shine.
Textural sesame-coloured linen curtains softened the rooms and added a relaxed elegance, that effortless, slightly undone French feel that’s so hard to fake.
Mirrors played a starring role too. Strategically placed, they reflected light, enhanced the sense of space, and added a touch of classic European charm throughout the home.
Collaboration is where the magic happens
This project was a true team effort. We worked closely alongside the clients’ own builder and our trusted cabinetmaker to ensure every detail was executed seamlessly. Clear communication, shared vision, and mutual respect made the entire process smooth, and the end result speaks for itself.
The home now feels cohesive, elevated, and completely refreshed without losing its soul.
Best of all, the clients were absolutely overjoyed. Seeing them fall back in love with their home is why we do what we do.
