Toni + Co

If you’ve ever walked into a space and instantly felt calm, energised, or completely at home — that’s design doing its real job. It’s not the pretty cushions, wooden floors or the colour on the wall (though we love those too). It’s the FEELING the space gives you. That, truly, is where great interior design and decorating begins.

At Toni + Co, we focus on creating a FEELING, not just making spaces look good. We believe a home that feels right, will always look right.

Why “the look” never tells the full story

Most people start their design journey scrolling Pinterest, saving inspiration, and trying to piece together a “style.” That’s normal – but it’s also where overwhelm kicks in. You’re choosing items, but you’re not clear on the feeling you actually want your home to create.

Without that emotional anchor, decisions become random, rushed, or disconnected. That’s how you end up with a home that’s maybe technically nice… but somehow not you; something FEELS off.   It may be beautiful, but not lived-in or welcoming. Stylish, but not comforting or relaxing. Pretty, but not functional or practical.

Remember, a look alone can’t guide layout, flow, lighting, practicality, or daily rituals. A FEELING can.

How Toni + Co designs with emotion first:

Before we talk about selecting or adding specific sofas or tiles, we ask lots of questions about who is using the space, what for, when and why.  We ask what do you want this space to feel like?

Cosy? Relaxing?  Energised? Calm? Layered? Lived-in? Luxurious? Joyful? Fun?

This is the filter that guides every choice – colour, proportion, materials, textures, layout, and function.

Designing this way is instinctive for us – we can read a space, we get to know the people who live in it and know what ’emotional tone’ it needs. How do you want to connect with others in that space?

We keep on top of trends and translate them into everyday living where appropriate, but it truly is less about them and more about honouring HOW you actually live in that space; the rituals you want to protect, the chaos you want to soften, the moments you want to elevate.

When you design from feeling:

  • Colour becomes storytelling, not decoration.
  • Materials become experiential – warm, cool, soft, structured.
  • Layout becomes intuitive – enhancing how you move, gather, rest, and reset.
  • Styling becomes soulful – less clutter, more purpose.

This is how we create homes clients never want to leave. Not because they look impressive (they do), but because they feel deeply right.

A practical example: same house, two completely different FEELINGS …

Imagine a living room with high ceilings, natural light, and an open-plan layout. A “look-first” approach might ask:

“Should I make this Hamptons? Modern Coastal? Contemporary?”

A feeling-first approach asks:

“Do I want this room to feel calm? Social? Warm? Minimal? Playful?”

If you want calm, grounding, and soft:

  • We’d explore muted tones, warm whites, textured fabrics, organic shapes.
  • The layout would prioritise flow, gentle zoning, and visual breathing room.
  • Lighting would be layered — ambient, soft, never harsh.
  • Styling would be simple and warm, with natural materials and subtle contrast.

But if you want energising, bold, and personality-filled:

  • Colour shifts to richer hues or confident accents.
  • Furniture becomes sculptural or eclectic.
  • Artwork takes centre stage.
  • The layout encourages conversation and movement.

Same architecture. Two entirely different emotional worlds.

This is the power of designing for feeling.

How to build your own “feeling-first” design brief

Here are simple prompts we use with clients to bring clarity before any major design decision:

  1. How do you want to feel when you walk into your home?
Safe? Inspired? Relaxed? Entertained? Choose three core feelings.
  2. What moments matter most?
Sunday slow mornings? Dinner parties? dinner with the family every night at the table? Kids visiting from uni? Quiet evenings?
Design should support your real life, not an imagined one.
  3. Where does your home currently feel “off”?
Too busy? Too cold? Too cluttered? Too dark? These clues inform the emotional direction.
  4. What is the one word that describes the vibe you crave?
Elegant, grounded, cosy, inviting, bold, fresh, warm, this word becomes your North Star.
  5. If your home were a person, how would it behave?
Warm and welcoming? Calm and quiet? Vibrant and outspoken?
    This helps unlock personality.

These aren’t aesthetic questions, they’re emotional and practical ones. And they lead to spaces that feel authentically aligned.

A beautiful home is wonderful, but a home that feels like you? That’s magic!

That’s where comfort, clarity, style, and confidence meet. And it’s exactly what Toni + Co does best: turning vague “I want it to look nice” energy into a space that genuinely supports your life, lifts your mood, and feels deeply yours.
